Employee stock options have entered their maturity phase in India. They have been a tradition in the IT companies, however it is now prevalent in many non-IT companies as well. Companies are now looking at various other alternatives to plain vanilla stock options.

We, ESOP Direct, have conducted our annual survey 2010 to analyze how employee stock options are being used by corporates. We bring to you our report on the survey. We hope it gives you insights into the trends in India, with respect to grant, employee coverage, vesting, exercise price, etc. and provides you with a good benchmarking for equity based compensation.
Employees Stock Option Plans have emerged as a major motivation and retention tool amongst Indian companies. The popularity of ESOP's, which have been established for the last 5-7 years, is only expected to increase and get wider in coming years.

In spite of the wide coverage and financial and legal implications, there is no authentic source of information which gives an idea about the trends and practices followed by Indian companies in designing their Stock Option Plans. Companies who wish to implement ESOPs do not possess enough information about how the other companies in their field have designed the plan.
